Integrating responsible digital practices

Accounting for around 5% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide, digital technology is growing exponentially in terms of both the energy consumption required to power the infrastructures and terminals used on a daily basis, and the quantity of natural resources extracted to increase its spread across all sectors. By signing the Responsible Digital (NR) charter, the university has committed itself to reducing the environmental impact of its digital activities.
Because the “responsible digital” angle encompasses more than just environmental criteria, the company is also working to improve the accessibility of available digital services. Finally, in the area of “social justice”, a number of initiatives are underway to facilitate access to IT equipment for all.
FOCUS: A university integrated into several networks
Responsible Digital Coalition (CNR)
As part of its COP21 initiative, the Rouen Normandy Metropolis has launched a collective action on the subject of digital sobriety. Called the “Coalition du Numérique Responsable”, this initiative aims to train and raise awareness of the social and environmental impacts of digital technology among companies, local authorities and other organizations in the metropolitan area. The university is a member of the4th promotion of the CNR, as part of this local dynamic.
Network of digital sobriety referents in higher education and research (ESR)
An initiative launched by the Alt-Impact program, the ESR network of digital sobriety referents brings together a community of committed university staff throughout France. The aim of this organization is to encourage digital sobriety in all French universities, by making reference teaching resources available to all, providing best practices in digital use, and offering expert conferences on the subject.
